Three decades of color

2000s · Millennial overture

The new millennium opened on Cerulean and Aqua Sky as internet optimism and anxiety alternated; exotic warm tones fueled mid-decade adventure, while Blue Iris (2008) and Mimosa (2009) soothed the financial crash.

2010s · Loud declarations

Social media turned color into public conversation: Emerald, Ultra Violet and Living Coral went viral in turn; 2016 broke the single-color tradition and the announcement became a global marketing starting gun.

2020s · The healing turn

A turbulent decade pushed color toward comfort: Classic Blue, Ultimate Gray & Illuminating, Peach Fuzz, Mocha Mousse and finally Cloud Dancer (2026) - blank space as the collective demand of an overloaded world.

About the Color of the Year

What is the Color of the Year?

A program run by the Pantone Color Institute since 1999, announced each December for the following year. The institute weighs global culture, technology, materials and socio-economic trends to single out the hue that best captures the collective mood - directly steering product decisions across fashion, interiors, industrial design and branding.

Why do some years have two colors?

Only twice: 2016 (Rose Quartz + Serenity) and 2021 (Ultimate Gray + Illuminating). The first voiced gender fluidity and inner balance; the second held gloom and hope together in a year that needed both.

Do the HEX values match the Pantone swatch books?

HEX values on this page follow Pantone's official annual-release sRGB values. A few TCX printed swatches differ slightly (e.g. Marsala 2015); in those cases no direct swatch-card link is shown and print work should rely on the physical card. 25 of 29 entries match our in-house official TCX cards digit-for-digit and link straight through.
